About the role

The post-holder will form a key part of the School of Management’s Employability Team, with specific responsibility for the School’s MSc Careers Team. This is a critical role, supporting the Head of Employability to deliver on MSc careers in support of the School’s commitment to postgraduate student employability.
The MSc Careers Manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of the MSc Careers Team, overseeing its activities and contributing to its strategic leadership. Excellence in delivery requires extensive Professional Services support and expertise that tailors careers support and guidance to the distinctive needs and aspirations of the School’s MSc students.
Built upon detailed knowledge of the career progression landscape for MSc graduates and an ability to work collaboratively with students to explore varied opportunities, MSc Careers provides comprehensive, up-to-date, individualised careers guidance and support across the School's highly differentiated MSc programmes. The post-holder works alongside academics with careers support duties for the School's MSc students or those in comparable roles. Such roles are held by the Associate Dean for Education, the Director of Teaching for Postgraduate Programmes, and the Directors of Studies for the MSc programmes.
Line management forms a major part of the role, dealing with student and company issues that arise, plus managing staff development, annual leave, sickness, and other operational responsibilities.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Manage the MSc Careers Team, designing, managing, and delivering careers support including credit-bearing and co-curricular experiential learning activities to enhance employability.
- Develop an understanding of changing student and employer requirements and use that to continually refine and improve career support and employability offerings.
- Lead acquisition of information and feedback on employer recruitment processes, particularly to reflect the origin of our students.
- Maintain close liaison with the University Careers Service and other external agencies and organisations is essential.

- A good understanding of the graduate labour market and recruitment and selection processes.

A single professional service culture for the University underpins close partnering and seamless service provision across professional staff in central and Faculty teams.
The Careers team provide information, advice and guidance to students and recent graduates to develop their career readiness, employability skills and plans to achieve their career aspirations. As well as the design and delivery of a range of other student employability and development initiatives.
The Careers Service is located in the University’s Academic Services portfolio, which provides services and support to students from the point of application to graduation, as well as teaching administration support to Faculties and Schools. The Academic Services team aims to ensure that students can articulate and achieve their goals, make the most of their time at the University, and access the support they need, when they need it.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post
The role plays a vital part in the student experience, and their eventual progression; with a particular focus on positively impacting career readiness and progression metrics (Graduate Outcome Survey). In addition, the role will also support and contribute to other areas of cross institutional work, including, but not limited to, TEF, REF and APP and in support of related strategies. It is expected that the post holder will continuingly work to ensure professional and outstanding service delivery for the provision of careers information, advice and guidance. The post holder will be an excellent communicator, building effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
It is expected that the post holder will have designated responsibilities across academic programmes, areas of expertise and specific cohorts (including specialist support for Post Graduate Students, Early Career Graduates etc.). However, as the workload fluctuates throughout the year, the post holder will need to be agile and support their colleagues and areas of work as required.
The post-holder will:
- Deliver outstanding, expert and professional careers and employability related education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG), primarily to students and graduates but also includes other internal and external stakeholders (including local employers and partners). This support should be delivered in a way which is accessible, including one to one and group-based activities and events.
- Ensure that protocols to manage sensitive or critical interactions with students, including the information arising from these interactions, are adhered to, and that all staff have sound knowledge of applicable privacy policy and legislation. This also includes protocols for the management of referrals, guided and assisted transactions, feedback and complaints.
- Ensure accurate information and appointment outcomes are recorded in the relevant enterprise systems and appropriate follow-up is undertaken.
- Maintain a high standard of knowledge of the graduate labour market and career developments in the HE sector, via professional membership bodies or other sector wide networks, and share insight into these areas and actively disseminate information across the service and institution.
- Work collegially with other teams and directorate leadership, to provide expertise and specialist career consultancy to senior managers and University academic departments: engaging colleagues in operational discussions regarding the progression of their students/graduates.
- Collaborate closely with staff responsible for data and intelligence, ensuring service delivery is optimised and is both reactive and proactive.
- Coordinate and lead new projects and initiatives to enhance the student experience and employability.
- When required, effectively motivate, coach and oversee staff to achieve goals. Provide clear performance expectations, regular feedback and document performance outcomes, ensuring poor performance is addressed and high performance is nurtured.
- Ensure that University policies, codes and regulations are met in the delivery of the service.
- Work collaboratively with the senior management team to ensure optimal efficiency and effectiveness of the service, monitoring workload and demands on the service and recommending actions as required
- Engage effectively with the technology deployed in the Careers team, provide input into the processes and procedures that guide its use, and make recommendations for any improvements.
- Maintain high levels of professional standards and delivery by actively seeking and engaging in continuous CPD (external and internal) activities.
- Contribute to identifying ways in which the service can enhance the student experience and make recommendations, actively participating in the implementation of new student and Academic Services initiatives.
Knowledge and Experience
- A relevant degree and professional careers IAG qualification (minimum level 6) and demonstrable experience.
- Can demonstrate a full understanding of a professional or specialised area of work in relation to student services
- Can demonstrate a full understanding of a professional or specialised area of work relating to careers information, advice and guidance, and/or graduate recruitment.

The Careers and Employment Service are seeking a proactive candidate to join our innovative Career Development Team, to provide tailored support to students and graduates. We are a friendly, positive team focused on moving students forward in their career journey. Main duties and responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide careers advice, guidance, information, and support to University of Hertfordshire students and recent graduates, helping them plan and progress in their career journeys.
You will be responsible for promoting, delivering, and encouraging student engagement in a range of activities designed to support career development. This will include delivering both one-to-one and group sessions, as well as contributing to projects that equip students and graduates with the skills, knowledge, and techniques needed to secure graduate-level employment or further study. The Career Development Consultant will contribute to enhancing the student experience by delivering activities that support the University’s strategic objectives, including improving performance in the Graduate Outcomes Survey and other key employability measures. You will also provide targeted support and interventions for underrepresented and disadvantaged groups, ensuring that all students at the University have access to high-quality employment opportunities, in line with the University’s Access and Participation Plan.
Skills and experience required
You should have experience in establishing and supporting effective relationships with students and graduates and /or employers in the context of graduate employment and work experience.
You will be an excellent communicator with the ability to negotiate with and engage and enthuse others. You will also have experience in delivering innovative careers and employability support in a non-traditional delivery model.
Qualifications required
You will hold a minimum of a degree or equivalent, or with substantial relevant experience.
A recognised guidance qualification, e.g. DipCG, or recognised teaching qualification or relevant recruitment, HR, or staff development qualification or substantial experience in managing graduate transitions into employment (e.g. graduate recruitment or development) in a commercial environment is desirable.
