Job Specification: Swimming Instructor Based at: Faversham Pools Role Reporting to Direct reports Location (e.g. Pools or remote working) Position type (e.g. full time, part time, job share) Level / Salary range Swimming Instructor General Manager and Lesson Co-ordinator N/A Faversham Pools, Faversham Hourly Rate, lessons run through the day and week with focus on 3.30pm to 7pm Monday to Friday £20/hr inclusive of holiday pay Job purpose and objective (why does this role exist?) Your primary role will be to teach people of all ages and abilities to develop swimming skills, technique and confidence in the water. We are a community, charity funded swimming pool and deliver lessons to a wide demographic of people. Context of the role To plan and deliver lessons ensuring adherence to the scheme of work and lesson plans. Correct faults in swimming techniques and identify ways to improve performance. Lessons will teach babies, children, and adults, across a range of abilities according to your qualification/s. You will teach individual and group lessons, along with school groups that book slots, following learn to swim assessment criteria and the national curriculum Accountabilities and responsibilities General responsibilities: ● To plan and deliver lessons ensuring adherence to the scheme of work and lesson plans according to their ability, including maintaining registers ● Ensure safe provision of all equipment and ensure it is used correctly, ● including the undertaking of risk assessments Identify participants’ abilities and encourage them to reach their full potential. ● Provide appropriate feedback to progress participants with explanations and demonstrate swimming techniques, correct and identify ways to improve performance ● To be a positive role model, creating a positive and fun environment in which to motivate and encourage children and adults to participate in swimming. ● Evaluate sessions and give feedback ● Regularly assess each participant’s ability and progress and arrange for the award of the appropriate certificates. ● Work alongside the Swimming Coordinator, other swimming teachers/coaches, lifeguards etc to help ensure that participants are able to swim in a safe environment. Knowledge, skills and competencies required Essential: All swimming teachers/coaches must have achieved, as a minimum, either of the following Swimming Teacher qualifications: ● STA Level 2 Award Teaching Swimming ● SEQ Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming (ASA/UKCC) In addition, we are looking for a candidate with: ● Enthusiastic and positive attitude towards swimming ● Good communicator ● The ability to inspire confidence and motivate swimmers ● Perseverance and patience ● The ability to encourage people and put them at ease ● An understanding of how to differentiate in a coaching session Desirable: If STA qualified – STA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming If SEQ qualified – SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming to Babies and Toddlers ● ● ● Evidenced qualifications or CPD for teaching specialist groups ● A recent clear and completed DBS check ● Flexibility to work within our timetable ● Understanding of swim software and updating clients’ information. Lifeguard Duty Managers, Senior Lifeguard Co-Ordinator, Operations Manager N/A Faversham Pools, Faversham Zero hours contract with flexibility around the business and to suit the individual Meets National Minimum Wage Supervising swimmers. Spotting hazards and preventing accidents. Giving advice on water safety. Controlling unruly behaviour. Water rescue. Context of the role To create a safe, fun and welcoming swimming pool for all our users and guests. Faversham Swimming Pools is a community, charity funded pool and we want to offer a wide range of activities to the population. The lifeguard’s role is to ensure the safety of all those in the water, this will range from early morning swimmers, to evenings, with families and weak swimmers and groups that use the pools on a regular basis. There are a range of indoor and outdoor pools, including rapids and paddling pools. Accountabilities and responsibilities General responsibilities: Supervise swimming activities in the pool and ensure that policies, guidelines and safety procedures are followed. Warn swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforce pool regulations and water safety policies. Administer first aid and rescue to swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administer CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary. Evaluate conditions for safety and initiate aquatics emergency action plan as required. Inspect pool facilities, equipment and water to ensure that they are safe and usable. Supervise and assist in cleaning the pool, and related facilities and equipment. Resolve scheduling conflicts to ensure safe pool environment when competing programs/priorities require use of aquatic facilities. Knowledge, skills and competencies required Essential: NPLQ – Valid qualification. Ongoing monthly refresher training will be provided. Competency Test will be required before being successful in the position. Swimming proficiency in all types of water conditions Ability to work on weekends and evenings. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Enthusiastic and positive attitude towards swimming and customer service Good communicator The ability to inspire confidence Perseverance and patience, to remain vigilant whilst on position. Desirable: Ability to adjust programs as necessary to ensure the safety of the visitors and other staff Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services Specific on site training will be provided to induct the successful candidate into our team of lifeguards This job specification was last reviewed in: August 2021
