We are now looking for a Scriptwriter & Content Strategist to help shape the creative and technical direction of our channel. Initially, we will collaborate with this person on a per-script, project basis, but for the right candidate, there is potential to transition into a full-time role with greater responsibility in content strategy and creative direction.
Key Responsibilities / What You’ll Do
Content Strategy & Ideation
- Analyze our existing videosto understand the style, themes, and audience appeal.
- Propose new, innovative video ideasthat align with the channel’s brand and engage our audience.
- Contribute to long-term content planningand shape the creative direction of future videos.
- Work closely with the producer and teamto refine concepts while ensuring clarity and accuracy.
Script Development
- Write engaging and well-structured scriptsthat simplify complex maritime and physics concepts.
- No prior scriptwriting experience is required, but fluency in English and a willingness to learnare essential.
- Develop a storytelling approachthat keeps technical content informative yet captivating.
- Work closely with the teamto refine scripts and ensure they align withproduction, animation, and narration needs.
- Collaborate with the producer and other scriptwritersto develop compelling content that fits the channel’s creative direction and storytelling style.
- Guide the voice actor throughout the recording process, setting up and leading meetings to provide script context, clarify pronunciation of technical terms, and ensure the intendedtone, pacing, and emphasisare effectively delivered.
- Provide ongoing feedbackon narration style, highlighting sections that require more emphasis, adjustments in tone, and improvements to enhance storytelling and engagement.
Technical Expertise & Research
- Ensure scripts are factually accurate and supported by credible sources.
- Background in Naval Engineering, Marine Engineering, or related fields.(A degree in marine engineering, naval engineering, or nautical engineering -navigation- is preferred but not required.)
- Experience in maritime engineering, naval architecture, or physics
- Stay informed on maritime industry trends, historical discoveries, and emerging technologies.
- Ensure the balance of technical depth and accessibilityfor a wide-ranging audience.
- Must have an interest in maritime education and explaining complex physics concepts to an audience.
Bonus Points
- Understanding of YouTube content strategy and audience engagement.
- Previous research experience in technical topics.

About the role
Marine vessels represent some of the most complex manufactured assets in the world and as such provide interesting, challenging and rewarding work for the people that design, build and support them through life. As an Engineer within our Marine Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in projects across the lifecycle of various types of vessels but most notably, specialised, light weight and high-speed vessels for both our UK and international customers; this role is primarily in support of our Commercial Shipping Capability.
You will be involved in solving engineering challenges through leading the development and delivery of the Marine Engineering aspects of our projects. The projects will range from supporting our customers in procuring and designing new ships to delivering complex in-service changes for both commercial and naval vessels, through to the delivery of feasibility studies, technical engineering investigations and analyses. More specifically you may expect to get experience of undertaking:
- System design and equipment selection development and integration using 2D and 3D modelling;
- Surveys to support design changes and investigations;
- Engineering investigations to resolve in-service defects and safety issues;
- Project Management of engineering tasks and projects;
- Engaging with the wider industry;
You will have opportunity to influence designs and team processes to improve designs, build quality and efficiency. Your day-to-day work will include design of mechanical systems and arrangements with supporting calculations, supporting the review of production engineering 3D models, inter-departmental communication and liaising with suppliers, partners and clients to develop design solutions.
You will also have an opportunity to contribute to the delivery of projects across our wider portfolio, including submarines and a range of broader consulting projects within our other market areas.
Research and development is also at the heart of what we do and you will have the opportunity to support; enhancing global understanding of ship issues, the development of future ship design concepts as well as the development of new capabilities, tools and processes.
This role is based out of our Fareham office where the majority of people within the Capability are based in the However, the capability is part of the UK and Europe region so a balance of in-office, remote and hybrid working will be considered. Travel to other BMT offices (we also have offices in Glasgow, Plymouth, Bristol and Bath) and customer sites will be necessary as and when required (occasional overseas travel may be required).
This is a full-time, fee earning role.
About you
Candidates will have an HNC/HND and/or a Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline i.e. Mechanical or Marine Engineering. You will ideally be professional qualified (registered as a Chartered Engineer with an appropriate professional body or Incorporated supported by domain experience) or demonstrate you are on the path for registration.
You’ll be commercially aware, ensuring that works are being carried out and completed to an appropriate standard and level of detail. You will be able to produce clear and well-presented drawings and calculations to a high quality. A high degree of initiative and autonomy is essential for this rewarding role, to meet agreed targets and deliverable deadlines.
You will have good interpersonal skills with experience of communicating your work to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner through meetings, written reports and/or presentations.
The following skills are considered essential:
- You will have a with a minimum of three years relevant design experience in the marine commercial industry for vessels in the range 15 – 70m+.
- An understanding of the issues pertaining to the integration of ship systems and equipment within ships or marine platforms;
- Ability to produce mechanical ship system schematics (in AutoCAD), ship and technical specifications, vessel arrangements and have experience in different construction materials and techniques, the ability to optimise designs for buildability, weight reduction, and have worked with multiple classification / code regulations;
- You will be proficient in AutoCAD 2D, and will, ideally have skills in 3D CAD software. You will also be proficient in Microsoft programmes;
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills with experience of leading technical projects to time, cost and quality through excellent organisational skills despite competing priorities.
The following skills are desirable:
- Defence domain experience;
- Ability to coach and mentor less experienced staff;
- Ability to receive and give feedback;
- Is flexible and can be deployed on a range of projects and customer sites due to breadth of Flexibility to be deployed on a range of projects and customer sites.
- Experience of PLM software or document management processes.
