Serco Maritime have a new and exciting opportunity for an Apprentice to join the team in Portsmouth completing a Level 4 Small Vessel Chief Engineer apprenticeship.

Serco Maritime Services deliver maritime support packages tailored to our customers' needs all delivered within a national accreditation framework. As owners and operators of specialist vessels, from harbour workboats to oceangoing support vessels, we provide world class integrated maritime services both in the UK and abroad. Our vessels provide a range of support, which include for example: dive support, military training, submarine rescue exercises, target/test equipment deployment/recovery and passenger transfers.

This is a unique apprenticeship where you will undertake the required training and sea service to eventually obtain the qualification required to serve as a Chief Engineer on board one of our smaller vessels.

The course will include gaining on the job experience by serving on board Serco operated vessels and periods of study at the Fleetwood Nautical Campus of Blackpool & The Fylde College. Periods at colleges will vary but will normally be between 2-6 weeks. This will allow you to gain the knowledge skills and behaviours required to complete the assessments you will undergo throughout the apprenticeship including the end point assessment undertaken with IAMI, which will enable you to gain a Small Vessel Chief Engineer COC.

Key Accountabilities:

• To attain and demonstrate competence as a member of the engineering department on-board assigned vessels.

• To undertake academic training in a maritime college (requiring significant periods away from home) to gain MCA Small Vessel Engineer Certificate of Competency and associated courses.

• To learn and perform watchkeeping duties during day or night shifts, both at sea and in port. These duties may include watchkeeping on sea passages as required by the master and chief engineer.

• To complete assigned mechanical and electrical workshop training, demonstrating safe and responsible attitudes.

• To become competent in maintenance duties including planned and unplanned maintenance duties on all items of main and auxiliary machinery on assigned vessels. This may include heavy maintenance in dry dockings and refits.

• To assist in vessel statutory inspections and classification surveys of assigned vessels, attaining knowledge of relevant rules and regulations.

• To undertake training and demonstrate competence to deal with emergency situations afloat, including fire, sea survival and other courses.

• To attain and demonstrate a good working knowledge of company procedures relating to the engineering department including record keeping, ordering spares and safety procedures.

• To obtain the required sea service in the time period allocated by the Maritime Training Officer.

• To comply with Serco values and behaviours throughout duration of the apprenticeship.

• To always comply with the UK Merchant Navy Code of Conduct .

• To undertake other duties and training commensurate with the level of the post as may be reasonably required from time to time.

The Marine Technician position is a shore side-based position. The qualified candidate supports a compressive program of maintenance and repair of the passenger vessels in the City Experiences' fleet of vessels. These vessels range in size and construction, are USCG inspected, and powered by mostly diesel engines. This position is based in Charlestown, Massachusetts for the Boston and North of Boston based fleet, and Quincy, Massachusetts for the Boston and South of Boston based fleet.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Perform preventative maintenance on diesel engines and other machinery found on passenger vessels. This includes but may not be limited to diesel main engines, diesel auxiliary generators, water jet propulsion equipment, marine reduction gears, hydraulic systems for steering, cranes, and thrusters.
• Ability to perform heavy machinery maintenance and repair work including engine valve gear timings, injector changes, cylinder head and liner overhauls. This may also include machinery rigging in and out of vessels.
• Perform water jet maintenance and repair while the vessel is in the water or in dry dock.
• Perform vessel and dockside plumbing repairs to pipes, valves, tanks, and pumps.
• Perform vessel electrical troubleshooting and repair of generators, motors, control systems, sensors, and related wiring. Also, low voltage and battery powered starting, control, electronic control, and monitoring systems.
• In dry dock repairs at the shipyards of the vessel drive lines, water jets, couplings and shafts supporting shipyard personnel and/or the Port Engineer.

About the role

• Guide teams of Naval Architects, Structural Engineers & Designers - responsible for basic design projects.
• Conduct detailed Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis of local structure, foundations and Global FE analysis & report for ships and floating structures
• Design of mooring systems for ships and floating structures. Should be able to perform Mooring Analysis using software like Optimoor or OrcaFlex.
• Perform all Naval Architecture calculations, including weight estimate, intact and damage stability characteristics, resistance, powering and hydrostatic properties and other calculations using Bentley's Maxsurf or GHS or DELFTship or equivalent.
• Good knowledge of class/IMO/Flag rules and regulations and should be able to apply these in the design.
• Should have knowledge and experience in structural analysis, especially marine structures and should be able to do scantling calculations using IRHull/NovaHull or DNV Poseidon or Excel based macros. Plus prior experience in ANSYS or similar software is a must
• Experience in performing buckling and vibrational analysis using ANSYS is preferred.
• CFD knowledge and experience in software like Openfoam, FLUENT or SHIPFLOW or CAESES is preferred.
• Liaise with client and /or class for basic design of ships and boats
• Interact with all stakeholders of the projects including clients, classification societies, vendors, shipyards, etc.
• Willing to re-locate on client site, either domestic or International on short notice.

Your Responsibilities:

Based in London, you'll work alongside a team who through the application of modelling techniques will work with developers to tackle flood risk issues and explore the implications and costs of proposed mitigation measures. This apprenticeship will enable you to learn whilst you earn as you study for an academic qualification. JOB SUMMARY: The Environmental and Energy Coordinator will act as a critical link between technical insights and operational execution, maximizing the value derived from the s-Insight tool. This role would provide support to help improve the management of environmental (including emissions), technical and commercial performance for the fleet.

• Provide training and support to onboard and shoreside teams and liaise between shipboard teams, the environmental team, and technical/operational teams.
• Ensure data accuracy and integrity, processing, and validation in StormGeo’s s-Insight tool, and troubleshooting discrepancies to ensure consistency and reliability.
• Analyze vessel data to identify inefficiencies and recommend corrective actions.
• Generate reports and actionable insights to improve fleet performance.
• Act as a critical link between technical insights and operational execution, maximizing the value derived from the s-Insight tool.
• Improve the StormGeo – DNV data interface and implement necessary changes/updates to the tool for FSRU use.
• Assist in emissions tracking, compliance reporting, and audit preparations.
• Collaborate with vessel operators and regulatory bodies (Class and Flag) to ensure compliance.
• Support the emissions reporting and calculations for EU ETS, Fuel EU for owned and chartered vessels and IMO GFI costs.
• Support with the decarbonization efforts.
• Support with creating, updating, approvals and maintaining the various environmental operational plans.

• BSc Eng / B Eng Civil Engineering degree is a definite requirement.
• A post-graduate masters (M Eng / MSc Eng) qualification in Port & Coastal Engineering will be highly advantages.
• A post-graduate masters (M Eng / MSc Eng) qualification in Structural or Hydraulic Engineering will be an advantage.
• 0 - 3 years' post graduate experience in Ports & Coastal engineering aspects, including design, modelling, masterplanning or direct supervision will be highly advantageous.
• Experience in coastal engineering and other software tools will be highly advantageous:

• Deltares Delft-3D, SWAN and DHI Mike (MA & BW).
• UNIBEST-CL+, XBEACH or similar (shoreline models, storm erosion models).
• Autodesk CAD & Civil3D, Revit, Robot.

• Competence in digital engineering and computer proficiency using MATLAB / PYTHON/VBA to analyse environmental data and/or facilitate designs would be an advantage.

1. Regulatory Compliance:

Master's Degree in Naval Engineering


• In general, minimum 3 years' experience working as a Junior Surveyor or minimum 5 years' experience in the engineering or survey fields within the marine industry or other applicable industry to their specialization.
• Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the scope of classification, statutory certification, related services and, before assignment, with their future work.
• Ability to develop a working knowledge of RINA Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and related
instructions, as well as the RINA Employee Safety Policy.
• Ability to understand engineering plans and have basic knowledge of shipbuilding practices and ship operations.
• Ability, in general, to perform either,
1) new building surveys:
- to assess the suitability of certified materials and products supplied for the new building,
- to assess that hull, machinery and equipment have been built in compliance with rules and regulations by means of compulsory inspections, tests and trials,
- to issue Certificates, Reports, Records and Status in compliance with rules and regulations.
And/or:
2) ship in service surveys:

Engineer (Oceanographer)

1. POST CONTEXT

This is a position within the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), an organization of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

CMRE is an established, excellent scientific research and experimentation facility that organizes and conducts scientific research and technology development, centred on the maritime domain, delivering innovative and field-tested Science & Technology (S&T) solutions to address defence and security needs of the Alliance.

This position is within the Engineering and Information Technology Division (EITD), which supports the execution of the Programme of Work.

EITD consists of the Engineering Branch and the Information Technology Branch:

• The Engineering Branch addresses the engineering and technological requirements of the Centre's research activity, by designing, developing, constructing, testing at-sea and maintaining, repairing and calibrating electronic, oceanographic, mechanical, acoustical assemblies and unmanned systems, especially prototypes, or combinations of such units as required. The branch has the following sections: Sonar & Marine Sensors Section, Ocean Engineering Section, Embedded Systems Section.
• The Information Technology Branch supports the conception, design, development and construction of state-of-the-art technologies in computing, networking and data infrastructure as well as developing, integrating, and validating software applications, services and products. All this is done while ensuring interoperability, security and compliance with relevant NATO policies and regulations. The branch has the following sections: Software Development and Data Management Section, Scientific CIS Section.

The position is within the Oceanography Cell of the Ocean Engineering Section of the Engineering Branch.

2. PRINCIPAL DUTIES

The Incumbent provides oceanographic services in support of CMRE Research and Development Programme. In general, their overall mission cover the supervision of a broad spectrum of activities including conception, specification, design, procurement, integration, testing, operation, maintenance and repair of cutting-edge oceanographic instrumentation and related marine systems.

Their duties cover a broad spectrum of activities related to Oceanographic and Ocean Engineering operations, ashore and on board vessels:

• Supervision of the lifecycle management of CMRE marine and oceanographic underwater systems, subsystems and components (specification, procurement, acceptance, testing, calibration, operation at sea, maintenance and repair);
• Support to CMRE Project and Programme Managers, including technical proposals and budget planning, for the oceanographic and marine related activities;
• Engineering coordination of sea/land based Trials, including planning, preparation, logistics, execution and reporting;
• Supervision of the CMRE underwater Gliders laboratory and control room;
• Execution of field and laboratory equipment evaluation and acceptance tests, using software based engineering tools, and mathematical models for engineering;
• Supervision and coordination of a Team of Technicians and Craftsperson as required by the Ocean Engineering Section work programme.

3. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND ADDITIONAL DUTIES

a. Flexibility Clause

The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties as directed.

b. Deployment/Travel

The incumbent may be required to perform their duties onboard Centre or chartered vessels. The incumbent may be required to undertake TDY assignments within and outside NATO boundaries.

c. Certification

The incumbent needs to hold a fit for sea certificate in line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Labour Organization (ILO) standards before taking up duty.

4. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

a. Professional Experience

• Operation of state of the art, oceanographic equipment, and systems;
• Participation to oceanographic activities, ashore and at sea, in support of underwater research or other industrial operations;
• Technical coordination of sea trials, including planning, preparation, execution, and reporting;
• Field and laboratory acceptance, calibration and functional tests;
• Support to technical projects, including planning, execution and reporting;
• Preparation of technical documents (e.g. feasibility studies, proposals, specifications, procedures, reports);
• Management of technical teams in day-to-day tasks, including objective setting and evaluation.

b. Education / Professional Experience

Bachelor’s Degree at a Nationally Recognized/Certified University in Engineering or other discipline relevant to the post, and at least 3 years post-related experience;

Master’s Degree at a Nationally Recognized/Certified University in Engineering or other discipline relevant to the post, and at least 1 year post-related experience.

c. Language Requirements

A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages (English and French), both written and spoken, is essential and some knowledge of the other is desirable.

A little more about your role...

We are looking for a Consultant who has experience in the delivery of flood risk assessment projects to work collaboratively on technically complex projects for a range of clients.

Working as part of our national team, the successful candidate will also be able to work seamlessly across other technical areas within the Sustainable Water Management team. This includes but is not limited to flood risk modelling, LLFA technical services and flood management solutions; as well as other water environment technical areas including Water EIA, WFD assessment, permitting applications, geomorphology and BNG.

You will contribute to a diverse range of projects but the main focus of your work is likely to be Flood Risk Assessment for major infrastructure projects in the UK and overseas, with wider involvement in flood modelling, flood management and Water EIA as appropriate to individual experience. Sharing your technical expertise and mentoring more junior members in the team will also be part of your role.

Responsibilities will include:

• Undertaking / performing project tasks assigned by senior team members such as:

• Perform hydrodynamics analyses and assessments on the behaviour and performance of both surface and subsurface vessels. This will include parameters on manoeuvring, resistance, and seakeeping.
• Analyse and interpret test data to develop and validate hydrodynamic predictions.

Your responsibilities as ROV Pilot Technician II - Subsea Cables:

• Performing maintenance and/or repairs on the Trenching or Plough spreads on board our vessels and/or in our Boskalis Waalhaven Center.
• Launch, recovery and Operating the TROV or Plough from the remote control cabin on the surface, typically in poor visibility conditions.
• Operating equipment, such as Jetting and/or Mechanical cutting devices, cameras, sonars, navigation, etc., as well as interpreting the various displays and data being obtained from the various sensors installed.
• Assisting in completing reports, administration and preparation of technical procedures (daily reports, work procedures, Risk analysis, permits, etc.) and/or reports.
• Safe execution and registration of Planned Maintenance and/or repair tasks in accordance with company procedures. Being part of the offshore project team you know how to communicate efficiently on different levels.

Qualifications

You can move ahead as a ROV Pilot Technician II - Subsea Cables if you have:

• 0-2 years of prior relevant work experience.
• Experience in working with electronics, hydraulics and/or mechanics.
• Experience working in a Subsea environment is advantageous.
• Education (bachelor's) degree in mechanical, electrical or electronic engineering.
• A team player mentality
• The willingness to travel globally (on a flexible rotational base, work on location for some weeks, followed by a similar amount of weeks' leave, mostly).
• Good communication skills and a good command of written and spoken English.

Here's What You'll Need:

• Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer with a strong MEng background.
• Broad experience in civil engineering design and construction.
