Design and Technology Technician
Role Overview
The primary purpose of this position is to support the smooth running of the DT Department, preparing teaching resources, maintaining equipment and the teaching environment to a high standard, and supporting the teachers in lessons, all of which enhances the learning experience for our students.
Responsibilities and Duties
● Ensure that the workshop machinery is regularly inspected and maintained for classroom use
● Ensure workshop tools are kept in optimum condition and stored correctly
● Manage the ordering of consumables and materials as requested by the Head of Department
● Take delivery of stores and materials, making arrangements for their storage and undertake regular stocktaking
Keep all storerooms, prep rooms and classrooms in a clean and tidy condition
● Maintain the storing and displaying of resources and student work
● Attend all Health & Safety and other relevant training courses as directed
And, as appropriate,
● Assist teachers in developing appropriate resources for teaching and learning
● Work alongside teachers to support the designing and making of products in lessons
Person Specification
Essential
● Be reliable, cheerful, communicative and positive – with a can-do attitude to problem-solving
● Be flexible, and able to show initiative, prioritising work effectively as necessary
● Able to work within a small team and also able to work alone
Desirable
• Practical/hands on experience of using workshop machinery and tools
• Good understanding of Health & Safety within a workshop environment
• Some experience of working with young people
• Some experience of ordering materials, and of keeping an up-to-date inventory
• Knowledge of one or more of the following areas: woodwork, metalwork, plastics, composites, CAD/CAM, mechanics
• A willingness to use MS Excel for keeping track of orders / spending. Training for this is available.
Other Duties
● This job description sets out the duties of the post at the time it was drawn up. The post-holder may be required, from time to time, to undertake other duties as may reasonably be allocated by the Head or the Head of Design & Technology, without changing the general character of the duties or the level of responsibility entailed.
Additional Information
● Term time, plus up to six days per annum for preparation of the workshops, maintenance and training.
● 37.5 contractual hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.30am until 5.00pm. Between October and March it may be possible some weeks to have Thursday afternoon off and work one evening instead.
